What Exactly Does BootMii Do?

I am preparing to install homebrew on my 3.4u nintendo wii. i have loaded Smash Stack on to the root of my SD card and the boot.elf thing as well. i know how to install it within the super smash brothers game and eveything , but is BootMii really needed? what does it do? and why do i need it? :/
