Our kittens shedding skin/hair?

Our kitten is about 7 months and we got him at 5 months old. We just started to notice he is shedding when you pet him but nothing where i was worried. Now he has a little patch that you can tell will fall of but also a layer of dry skin or dead skin i am not sure is peeling. is this normal? When we got him he was eating royal canin 20-25 bucks for a small bag. We started feeding him something cheaper than that could this be the reason or is this normal?
