How do people hack and mod gaming consoles?

They start by reverse engineering the circuit boards of the console. After they are knowlegable on these boards, they are able to find, hopefully, a security exploit (loophole in the security program), that allows them to modify the flash memory (the internal memory of the wii), so that they can install homebrew or access savegame files.
