you need to load cfw (custome firmware) in order to make the psp run anything not supported by sony. you best bet is to have a look at www.psp-hacks.com, they have all the files and information you need to get started. i would unstall 6.38 ME-2 as that is the latest version, you are going to need a pandora battery to get started also.
